About Me
Conquering my fear of heights
(Crater Lake, OR)
I began my doctoral studies in mathematics education at Michigan State University (MSU) in Fall 2009, after earning a master's degree in mathematics earlier that year. My personal research interests include (a) understanding the purposes of and philosophies behind school mathematics, (b) exploring how to promote equitable access for all groups to meaningful mathematics, and (c) gaining insight into students' mathematical identities and experiences at the secondary and undergraduate levels.
Prior to teaching at the University of Washington Bothell, I taught at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA and at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, MA.
Since 2010, I have been teaching mathematics courses at the post-secondary level. Specifically, I have taught everything from college algebra to mathematics content and methods courses for pre-service elementary teachers to calculus. I have also acted as a field instructor for secondary mathematics interns in the Lansing Area. I worked as a research assistant on the STEM project for six semesters and was a member of the MDISC project team from 2010 until 2012. Additionally, I served as an organizer for the Mathematics Learning Research Group for two years.
